A Few Thoughts on Eating Meats

by Danny Bunn, minister of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ

Starting off with some thoughts on eating meats and the puffer fish since I was debating another guy on this issue.

Lev. 11
9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.

To the one that posted this article that I am dealing with, I think you shot yourself in the foot, or maybe the mouth. You are seeking to prove that the ones who believe the bible that ALL meat is good for you if it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer are wrong and the ones who practice the way the Jews eat are the ones who are right on. So the verse above tells me all fish with fins are to be eaten. And I would think the one posting this article will go out and get some puffer fish and dig it because they have fins, yummy, yummy.

NOW let's go to the word of God for those who walk in the freedom that is in Christ Jesus NOT in Moses law and he had plenty of them for that time period but also remember that NO ONE is saved by the law but by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Rom 3
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Rom 4
1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

AND also check Gal 3
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

What is the schoolmaster? It is the law, it kept us in line till Jesus Christ should come. If the law could save then Jesus Chirst would never have come to set us free since the law could do it??? BUT the law can NOT do it and never could, that is not the purpose of the law. Using the law illustration, we as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ are UNDER a much higher law, it is called the law of love. Faith and love work together, as we walk in the faith of God, we walk in the love of God.
A man asked Jesus what is the highest law or commandment. AND here is the answer.

Matt 22
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Jesus told his disciples:
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
As we walk in the love of God then we walk in the law of God to make it simple that a little child can't err in the way, just walk in the faith and you will be walking in the love life of God.

Back to my thoughts on eating meats.

Luke 10
8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
Jesus sent his disciples out to the Gentiles, what type of food do you think was set before them???
An application to this verse, "I had a friend that I have been ministering to regarding the word of God bring me over something to eat since he knows that I didn't go anywhere for Thanksgiving dinner. He brought me some ham, and rolls, mashed potatoes, etc. I enjoy his kindness and the food after I prayed over it and thanked the Lord for it."

Acts 10
9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
13 And THERE CAME A VOICE TO HIM, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
14 But Peter said, NOT SO, Lord; for I HAVE NEVER EATEN ANY THING THAT IS COMMON OR UNCLESN.
15 And THE VOICE SPAKE UNTO HIM THE SECOND TIME, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
16 This was DONE THRICE: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
17 Now while Peter DOUBTED IN HIMSELF what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,
18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
24 And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and he had called together his kinsmen and near friends.
25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.
26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
27 And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
28 And he said unto them, YE KNOW HOW THAT IT IS AN UNLAWFUL THING FOR A MAN THAT IS A JEW TO KEEP COMPANY, OR SHOULD COME UNTO ONE OF ANOTHER NATION; but God HATH SHEWED ME THAT I SHOULD NOT CALL ANY MAN COMMON OR UNCLEAN.
29 Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?
30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
31 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.
33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.
34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

NOW in these verses we see that Peter knew one truth to apply what happened to him in that vision was the Gentiles who came to his door about the time the vision was over. But the word of God is a collective whole and just as we saw that all men are to be clean in God's eyes not just the Jews. We will now see another fulfillment of that verse.

I Tim 4
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4 For EVERY CREATURE of God is good, and NOTHING to be refused, IF it be RECEIVED WITH THANKSGIVING:
5 For IT IS SANCTIFIED by the word of God and prayer.

6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

So here we see even clearer the truth in Peter's vision, what God hath cleansed call thou not unclean. God was showing Peter meat and meat is meat. If the whole purpose of the vision was for the Gentiles, God could have easily shown Peter some Gentiles and Peter could have said, "Lord you know I do not talk to those kind of people BUT he didn't he used meat for at least a two fold purpose.

Acts 16
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
Do you really think they were eating Jewish approved food or eating Roman food???

Gal 2
11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.
13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.
14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, IF THOU, BEING A JEW, LIVEST AFTER THE MANNER OF THE GENTILES, AND NOT AS THE JEWS, WHY COMPELLEST THOU THE GENTILES TO LIVE AS DO THE JEWS?
Verse 14 is a good question for the Messianic Jews, so to speak. Peter was living like the Gentiles, it makes me wonder if he was eating a ham sandwich or something of that nature, who knows? By Paul's words he was NOT living as a Jew. Interesting! Also keep in mind verse 12, Peter was eating with the Gentiles.

Mark 7
11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
God used a lot of typology in the Old Testament with his people and those types were mainly for them such as the Sabbath day, God told them it was between him and the Jews. Abraham almost sacrificing his son on the altar was a type of God the Father offering Jesus up for the world's sins. The lamb was a sin offering in the OT and Jesus was the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.

Webster's 1828 Dictionary
Unclean
UNCLE'AN, a.
1. Not clean; foul; dirty; filthy.
2. In the Jewish law, ceremonially impure; not cleansed by ritual practices. Num 19. Lev 11. Rom 14.
3. Foul with sin. Mat 10.
That holy place where no unclean thing shall enter.
4. Not in covenant with God. 1 Cor 7.
5. Lewd; unchaste.
Adultery of the heart, consisting of inordinate and unclean affections.
No unclean person - hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Eph 5.

So based on Webster's definition can prayer and thanks for unclean food make the food clean? We know the prayer of faith to Jesus Christ for forgiveness makes us clean so surely the prayer of faith for unclean food will make it clean. WHY anyone thinks that God can't do that is way out in left field, to put it gently. SO KEEP IN MIND, unclean people can be made clean by faith then why would anybody think that unclean food can't be made clean? THEY ARE SAYING THAT GOD CAN CLEANSE UNCLEAN PEOPLE BUT HE CAN'T CLEANSE UNCLEAN FOOD. It basically boils down to this, people LIKE to think that they are doing something that makes them stand out as a more sanctified, a more holy, a more clean Christian because they are doing so many good things, keeping so many laws, etc. It is in reality a spit in the face of God. I live for him, share his life with others because he is the answer NOT not doing this or doing that. Christ and Christ alone is to be preached, he died to set mankind free, all of them. He died for the world's sins. Anybody wants to talk deeper, we can.
